Shaken Baby Syndrome Advocates Receive Awards at the 14th Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference

Janet Simmons, Decatur, and Debbie Dycus, Edwardsville, were presented with 2008 Friend of Children Volunteer Awards at Prevent Child Abuse Illinois' 14th Annual Statewide Child Abuse Prevention Conference in Oak Brook on November 20, 2008.

Janet and Debbie were acknowledged for their volunteer efforts as cofounders of The National Shaken Baby Coalition.

The coalition provides public awareness about Shaken Baby Syndrome and online support for families and friends who have been affected by the syndrome.

Both Janet and Debbie have testified before Illinois legislators and have presented at workshops throughout the state to educate about the dangers of shaking an infant.

Janet's daughter, Kristina (age 10) and Debbie's niece, Taylor (age 9) were each shaken when they were infants and they each suffered devastating injuries from those incidents.

Janet and Debbie take their children with them as they go to daycare centers, high schools, and civic groups to educate the public about Shaken Baby Syndrome.

More than 500 child abuse prevention advocates were present as Janet and Debbie received the 2008 Friend of Children Volunteer Awards for their courageous and generous advocacy on behalf of Illinois children and families.

    Family Participation Opportunity

    Dear Friends:

The National Shaken Baby Coalition cordially invites you to participate in our fourth production for the family reception presentation to be shown at the Eighth North American Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome in 2010. Our first presentation included the pictures and stories of 42 SBS victims, the second 62 and the third 80, but sadly there are so many more pictures and stories that need to be included. We are striving to include as many families as we can to give a more accurate accounting of the number of families impacted. It is also a way to pay tribute to our SBS victims.

If you would like to participate, please CLICK HERE for the photo release form, fill it out, send it back and include a picture(s), share your story and return to me no later than August 1, 2010 to allow time for production. Photos will not be returned unless requested.

One free copy of the DVD will be given to each family that submits a photo and story. We also ask that if you know of other SBS families to please pass this information along to them also, as they might not be on our mailing list.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email and I would be more than happy to assist you.

    Sincerely,
    Debbie Dycus
    Cofounder, Secretary/Treasurer

    Shaken Baby Coalition

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is the collection of signs and symptoms resulting from the violent shaking of an infant or small child.

It is a form of child abuse.

In America last year, approximately 1,200 - 1,400 children were shaken for whom treatment was sought. Of these tiny victims, 25 -30% died as a result of their injuries. The rest will have lifelong complications.

It is likely that many more babies suffer from the effects of SBS and no one knows, because SBS victims rarely have any external evidence of trauma.
